In the Bible, a name carries something. A name is identity, authority, and reputation gathered into one word. When Peter and John meet the lame man at the gate called Beautiful (Acts 3), Peter does not say, "By my prayers." He does not say, "By my faith." He says one thing: "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." (Acts 3:6) The man stands. He walks. He leaps into the temple praising God. And when the crowd gathers in astonishment, Peter immediately corrects any thought that he has done this: "His name — by faith in his name — has made this man strong, whom you see and know." (Acts 3:16) THE SHALIACH — SENT IN HIS NAME In the Jewish world, there was a legal principle called the Shaliach: an authorised representative. The Shaliach was not just a messenger; he carried the authority of the one who sent him. To deal with the Shaliach was to deal with the sender. Jesus uses this principle openly: "As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you." (John 20:21) You are not making your own authority. You carry His. When you speak in His name, when you pray in His name, when you serve in His name — Heaven recognises the Sender behind the sent one. This is why Peter is bold. He is not bold in himself. He is bold because he knows whose name he carries. WHAT THE NAME IS NOT Let us guard against two errors. First, the Name is not a magic formula. The sons of Sceva in Acts 19 tried to use the name of Jesus as a spell — "I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims" — and were beaten and run out naked. The Name is not a word you wear. It is a Person you walk with. Second, the Name is not our property. We do not own it. We are entrusted with it. A Shaliach who acts against the will of his sender loses his standing. We carry His Name only as long as we walk in His ways. WHY THIS MATTERS IN THE VILLAGE You may have very few resources. No big budget. No degree. No platform. But brother, sister — you carry the only Name that has ever raised the dead. You carry the Name that demons recognise. You carry the Name above every name. The lame man at the gate had no idea who Peter was. He did not need to. He needed the Name Peter carried. The people you serve do not need your reputation. They need His. THREE EXHORTATIONS 1. Pray in His name with confidence. Not as a closing word ("in Jesus' name, amen") tacked onto the end. Pray into the authority of His Name — believing that Heaven hears you because of who He is, not because of who you are. 2. Speak in His name with reverence. Do not use His Name carelessly. Do not invoke it for ambition or to win arguments. Use it the way Peter did — to lift up the broken. 3. Live in His name with integrity. A Shaliach is known by the character of the One who sent him. Live so that when people meet you, they meet Him. REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. Are you trying to minister in your own name or in His? 2. When did you last pray and truly believe Heaven was hearing you because of Jesus? 3. Where in your life is the Name being used carelessly? PRAYER Lord Jesus, Your Name is above every name. Teach me to carry it well — with confidence in the throne room, with reverence in the street, with integrity in my home. I have nothing else worth carrying. In Your name, amen. ========== Next lesson: The Holy Spirit — Person and Power. ---------- KGM School of Service — Knowing God Missions · Tumenyimana https://kgm-school-preview.netlify.app
