Lesson 1 — He Has Spoken: The Necessity of Revelation
"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son." — Hebrews 1:1–2
The core idea
We cannot discover an infinite God with our finite minds; we can only receive what He has graciously chosen to disclose. Revelation is God's gracious condescension to make Himself known to His creatures.
Before we can ask, "Who is God?" we must first ask, "How can we know anything about God at all?" Knowledge of God is possible only because God, a personal and communicative Being, has chosen to reveal Himself.
The inexhaustible friend
Think of trying to know a best friend only by observation, without communication. You may learn their habits, but to know a person's heart, they must speak. How much more is this true of God?
The possibility of revelation — how can an infinite God be known?
God is Personal. He is not an impersonal force. He has intellect, will, and emotion.
God is All-Powerful. He can bridge the infinite–finite gap.
God is Love. His relational nature desires to share Himself.
The necessity of revelation — why must God speak?
Reason 1 — the Creator–Creature gulf (our finitude). An amoeba cannot comprehend a human. The gap is too vast. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord" (Isaiah 55:8–9).
Reason 2 — the Sin–Holiness gulf (our fallenness). Sin darkens our understanding and leads us to suppress the truth. We are not just limited; we are lost (Romans 1:18–21).
God's outdoor voice: General Revelation
Available to all people, at all times.
Its channels are creation (the cosmos) and conscience (the moral law within). Its purpose is to reveal God's existence and power, leaving humanity "without excuse" (Romans 1:19–20). Its limitation: it is the "bad news" — we are accountable and have failed — without the Good News of salvation.
God's inside voice: Special Revelation
God's specific communications: historical acts, the prophets, and the climax — Jesus Christ, the Living Word. The record of this revelation is the Bible, the Written Word. Its purpose is relational and redemptive — to reveal God's character and His plan of salvation.
Comparing the two voices
- Audience — General: universal, all people. Special: particular, now for all.
- Channels — General: creation and conscience. Special: Christ and Scripture.
- Message — General: God's power and moral law. Special: God's character and grace.
- Purpose — General: to make us "without excuse." Special: to bring us to salvation.
So what?
God is not silent. He has shouted His glory in creation and whispered His love in His Son. This truth produces humility — we depend on His grace; confidence — our faith stands on solid ground; worship — the right response to a God who speaks; and a passion for evangelism — sharing the special revelation He has given.
Talk it through together
- What is the difference between knowing about someone and truly knowing them personally?
- If creation declares God's glory so clearly, why don't all people worship Him? (Romans 1)
- Why is Special Revelation necessary if we already have General Revelation?
