Lesson 2 — The Chef's Table: A Balanced Theological Method

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." — 2 Timothy 3:16

The core idea

All true theology is derived solely from the ingredients God has provided in Scripture, and Scripture itself is the divine cookbook that teaches us how to interpret those ingredients faithfully.

A balanced meal for the soul

Christian teaching should be like a well-balanced meal. We don't feed our children only sweets, even if they enjoy them. We don't serve only carbohydrates while ignoring proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Yet in many churches, spiritual nourishment is often one-dimensional. Some focus exclusively on faith and miracles, while others emphasize intellectual theology but neglect passionate devotion. Some seek experiences of God's power but fail to pursue an understanding of His character.

Throughout the Christian life we are taught many valuable truths — how to pray, read the Bible, fast, evangelize, and exercise faith. But one foundational teaching is often largely absent: Who is God?

A Christian life that pursues God's power while neglecting the knowledge of His person is incomplete. This course seeks to restore balance by bringing believers into a deeper understanding of the God they serve.

The athlete's biography

Consider a renowned athlete. Some fans are only interested in his record-breaking statistics and championship wins — the "miracles" and "power." Others study his training regimen and diet meticulously — the "how-to" of Christian living. A few delve into his biography: his childhood, his struggles, his character, what truly motivates him — understanding who he is. Knowing his character provides a much richer picture than his achievements or methods alone. Our spiritual lives are incomplete if we focus on God's power or Christian duties without deeply seeking to know His heart and character.

The study of God must come first

All knowledge must begin with God. The Bible itself opens with God as the first subject: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). Before there was anything — before time, space, or matter — there was God. Before we seek to understand anything else, we must seek to know Him. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding" (Proverbs 9:10).

The Source and the tools

The Holy Bible — sixty-six books — is the Source: infallible, inerrant, sufficient, and binding. It is the foundation and substance of our theology.

Reason, tradition, and experience are the tools: fallible, flawed, helpful, and subordinate. They assist in understanding and applying the theology that comes from the Source — they never replace it.

Like the Bereans, we receive the message with eagerness and examine "the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true" (Acts 17:11). "Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar" (Proverbs 30:5–6).

Loving God begins with knowing Him

The greatest commandment is not merely to serve God, believe in Him, or even worship Him — it is to love Him with all that we are (Matthew 22:37). But love is always preceded by knowledge. You cannot truly love what you do not know. If we do not pursue an accurate understanding of God, we risk worshiping a false image — one shaped by our personal desires, culture, or misconceptions.

Talk it through together

  1. "True love is rooted in knowledge." How have you experienced this in human relationships — and with God?
  2. What does the "balanced meal" analogy suggest about your spiritual diet today?
  3. Why is seeking to know God deeply sometimes less emphasized than serving Him or seeking His blessings?
